Are there reasons why I would want the upgraded amp-l-start vs the trik-l-start starting battery maintainer?

Only if you have a high level of power drain on the starting batteries with out regularly driving the motorhome. Multiple accessories that are using the 12v power plugs such as phone chargers, laptops and tire pressure monitors. Otherwise the 5 amp unit is generally sufficient in maintaining battery levels.
