On most electric RV steps (Kwikee, Lippert, etc) the motor does not “know” where the step is. It just runs in one direction until either:
-
A limit switch tells the control box “I’m fully in or out, shut the motor off”, or
-
The motor loads up, current spikes, and the controller shuts it off.
If that signal never happens, the controller keeps feeding the motor and you get click click click as:
-
The clutch in the gearbox slips, or
-
Teeth in the plastic gear are skipping under load.
So, when the step is fully retracted and keeps clicking:
-
The limit switch is not being seen
-
Bad or sticky limit switch in the gearbox or linkage.
-
Misadjusted linkage so the cam never actually hits the switch.
-
Broken or corroded wiring between the switch, motor, and control module.
-
-
Door or control module logic issue
-
Control module never sees “travel completed” so it keeps powering the motor.
-
Ground connection issues are common on older steps and make the module act weird.
-
-
Mechanical problem in the gear box
-
Worn clutch or stripped gear so the motor keeps spinning while the step is stopped, causing the repetitive clicking.
-
This usually starts as occasional clicking and gets worse.
