If the light comes on when you open the door, that tells us a few important things:
-
The door switch / sensor is working
-
The control box has 12 volt power and ground (at least enough for the light)
-
The problem is downstream of the controller: motor circuit, gearbox, or control box output
Ranked from most common to less likely:
-
Bad motor or jammed gearbox
-
Bad or weak ground / power feed at the step motor
-
Control box output failure
Do these with the coach safely parked, wheels chocked, and somebody at the door while you watch the step.
-
Listen closely when the door opens or closes
-
Do you hear any click from the step motor area or control box?
-
No click at all: lean more toward control box output / wiring.
-
Single click but no movement: motor or gearbox is often locked up.
-
-
Check the step ground
-
Find the ground wire from the step assembly to the frame.
-
Pull the screw/bolt, wire brush or sand both the ring terminal and the frame to shiny metal, put it back tight.
-
Retest. A bad ground is stupid common on older Kwikee steps.
-
-
Try helping the step by hand
-
With power off (pull the fuse or disconnect battery), see if the step can move by hand through its travel.
-
If it is locked solid, there may be a mechanical bind or the gearbox is seized.
-
If it moves freely by hand but never with power, that points more to electrical (motor or controller).
