Here's how to install a Blue Ox weight distribution hitch:
Initial Setup and MeasurementsBefore starting:
- Park your connected trailer and vehicle on level ground
- Measure and record the height from the ground to the top of your trailer coupler when level
- Ensure your trailer is loaded as it typically would be for towing
Install the hitch head:
- Insert the shank into your vehicle's receiver hitch
- Adjust the head angle and height so the trailer sits level when connected (you may need to try different positions)
- Secure with the appropriate pin and clip
- Torque the adjustment bolts to Blue Ox specifications (typically 250-300 ft-lbs)
- Position the brackets on your trailer frame, typically 28-32" back from the coupler center (check your manual for exact measurements)
- Ensure brackets are:
- Level with each other
- Equal distance from the coupler
- Positioned so spring bars will clear any propane tanks or battery boxes
- Secure using either:
- U-bolts (for frames that allow drilling)
- Clamp-on brackets (no-drill option)
- Torque all bracket bolts to specification (usually 45-65 ft-lbs)
- Insert spring bars into the hitch head sockets
- Attach the chains to the spring bars
- Connect trailer to your vehicle
- Jack the trailer tongue up slightly to put weight on the hitch
- Lift spring bars into position and connect chains to frame brackets
- Start with 4-5 links of tension as a baseline
- Both sides should have equal chain links engaged
Measure your setup:
- Measure front and rear wheel well heights before and after WDH engagement
- The front shouldn't rise more than it drops when the trailer is connected
- Adjust chain tension to distribute weight properly:
- Too little tension = rear sag, lifted front end
- Too much tension = harsh ride, over-lifted rear
Adjustment tips:
- Use the lift handle tool provided by Blue Ox for raising spring bars
- Add/remove chain links equally on both sides
- The head angle adjustment affects how much weight gets transferred
- You may need several test drives to dial in the perfect setup
- Ensure safety clips are installed on all pins
- Verify adequate clearance between spring bars and trailer frame/components
- Check that brackets haven't shifted after initial towing
- Re-torque all bolts after first 500 miles
For SwayPro models specifically: The sway control is integrated, so no additional setup is needed beyond proper weight distribution adjustment.
Important notes:
- Some Blue Ox models have specific torque specs and measurements - always defer to your manual
- Consider having your first setup checked by an RV dealer or experienced tower
- Take photos of your final setup for reference when reconnecting
The entire installation typically takes 2-3 hours for first-timers, getting faster with experience.
