Yes and no. Save gallon capacity but functions are different. The SW12DEL has a 12VDC Relay (that’s what the “L” stands for) that allows the owner to operate the 120VAC side from inside the camper. The SW12DEM has a Motor-Aid feature (that’s what the “M” stands for), it was built with a tube that circled the outside of the tank that was hooked up to the coach’s engine coolant lines to help preheat the water inside the tank while traveling down the road. FYI, all Motor-Aid water heaters have been discontinued and are no longer available. If someone had a SW12DEM water heater and is seeking a replacement, I would suggest the SW12DE .
