How much clearance is needed between the frame rail and a grey water tank for the outside the rail installation?

Typically need 3 3/4" of space, all the kits come with outside AND inside mount brackets so if it didn't fit you can either: Drill the frame and bolt cylinder directly to the frame or use inside mount weld-on bracket. Passenger and driver do not have to match, just keep close to mirrored as far as location/distance from rear axle.
