The nominal sizes of NPT threads are based roughly on the ID of the pipe. So, the outside diameter of a 1/4” NPT thread measures approximately 0.54” (a little more than 1/2”). This diameter is marked by the yellow arrows in this picture of the MEGR-298 regulator. This is the 1/4” NPT inlet, and the outlet is 3/8” NPT, and the outside diameter of a 3/8” NPT thread measures approximately 0.67” (a little more than 5/8”).
