The wire size for my light kit is only 16/18 awg including the ground. Do I need to run a 14 awg ground wire to the negative side of the battery from the 6-pin connector instead of using the 16/18 awg wire used for the lights?

You dont need to run any wires to the negative side of the battery with the charge line kit. You just run the red wire from the 6-pin plug to the circuit breaker, then from the circuit breaker to the positive terminal on the battery.
