Is it possible that a surge could effect or change the 2:30 reset time to something else? Mine takes hours to reset.

Yes, there is a timer on the circuit board. If there are significant voltage disturbances or a surge, the timer portion of the circuit board could get damaged. They have had reports of the same issue as you are reporting and it was caused by voltage disturbances. In those cases, it took longer to engage but it did appear to be a consistent time element. It was just longer.
