Is the IW60 Water Heater suitable for using throughout the winter in cold climates? If so, what precautions need to be used?

It is, but you have to keep in mind that the IW60 has two built in anti-freeze protections. An electronic freeze protection and a manual thermo wax freeze protection. Each will turn on/open when the inlet water temp drops to 39 degrees F, so if your water will be that cold you will have that issue to deal with.
