I was working with a tech at Hughes Autoformers and he said it is not possible. The whole design more or less is integrated around and with the fact that the new ones have surge protection.
To get surge protection and the PWD (Power Watchdog Bluetooth function), their base model surge protectors start at only $97. So even if it was possible, the price to ship it to Hughes Autoformer and back and add the part would probably exceed just buying a stand alone surge protector. So buying a surge protector separately might be easier. Below is the link to their surge protectors.
