All Suburban water heaters are manufactured with a magnesium anode rod. The magnesium rods (part #232767) provides protection against corrosion. In harsher water conditions, Suburban recommends the use of the optional aluminum anode rod (part # 232768). The aluminum rod reacts slower than a magnesium rod, so it lasts longer. In most situations the aluminum rod is too slow in reacting to provide the desired protection to the water heater tank that is why the magnesium is used as the standard rod. The fact that the magnesium rod is being consumed means that it is working, the rate of consumption depends on the water condition, which means that it is geographical range of water types. However, there are times when the magnesium rod is rapidly consumed by excessive iron and mineral deposits in the water supply.
