Hello Rick,
Take the extended gas prop with the door as open as you will want it. Try to fit the strut between the door and where you want to mount it. You will want to mark where you want the prop and make sure you have enough space for the strut to fit when the door is closed. If the spring is too compressed when closed, the door will spring open. Take measurements and just keep trying until it fits right. Most of the time it takes a few tries before you get it in the correct location.

Are you implying that I keep drilling holes into my compartment door until it works? Are there any guidelines like being within a couple inches to the top or something similar?

No, not at all. You will want to mark the spots with a marker or pencil. I apologize that I did not explain this clearly enough. I have found a video on youtube that shows how to measure exactly. You can view this here-->
