Backflusing generally only needs to be done once if you used over part-time over 6 month camping season or 2 to 3 times if used year around.
Begin by attaching a garden hose with strong water pressure to the outlet side of the unit. Allow water to flow out of the inlet connection (remove Y valve) at a rate of one gallon per minute. The reverse flow of water through the system mechanically cleans the resin bed of any accumulated iron or manganese as well as any sediment that may have entered the unit. If backflushing is being done along with a regeneration process, the backflush should be done first.
