I have the old model, RV2130. Is it ok to use a surge protector with this?

Yes you can use a surge protector with the Hughes RV2130 or RV220-50. The only thing is if the surge protector has the High/Low shutoff it needs to go after the autoformer. Reason being, the surge will shut off power to the autoformer in low voltage not allowing the autoformer to do it's job of boosting when low voltage.
