Why does my furnace come on when electric heat is selected on the thermostat?

If there is a difference of roughly 5 or more degrees and you choose electric heat, the furnace will kick on and run until you are up to set temperature, then just the electric heat will be used within the 5 degrees, instead of the furnace.
