Around 12" is the industry standard. Don't want to go too far out or you lose capacity.
How long is the shank from the pin hole to the side rail closest to the RV? Pro Series 63153 Metal Cargo Carrier With Bolted Side Rails Cargo Racks
My spare tire and tire mount are on the bumper. I have to clear 18" from the cotter pin hole to get past the spare tire.
