The resin is stored in the water softener tank, the water passes through the resin which holds electrically charged ions. The harmful minerals like calcium, magnesium, lime and iron are attracted to the charged ions and attach to them. This results in their removal, producing soft water. The resin is important in ridding your water of all the harmful minerals, by getting rid of them it will cut back on how much soap you use in the shower, detergent in the laundry and keep the plumber away by eliminating build up in your plumbing fixtures.
