How to compress the gas spring?

I bought 2 GSNI-5000 gas springs. I got the ends on without a problem. But, I cannot make it close. is there a secrete.

I spoke with the manufacturer and they stated that when you install the gas spring you want to do it with the door in open position. The door alone if the weight is proper should compress the gas spring. If not it could possibly be that this is too high of pressure for the weight of the door.
