According to JR Products, yes the end fittings do unscrew from the gas spring strut.
Ref: GSNI-5300-50, Do the end fitting unscrew from strut. Must be able to screw strut to fitting on coach. JR Products GSNI-5300-50 Gas Spring Lift Strut, 11.41 - 20'', 50 Lbs Force Gas Struts
The current struts need to be replaced. All I do is unscrew struts from fitting.
