P-seal replacement

I have a Alfa Sun 2003 and need to replace the P-seals(white) where the wiper was screwed to the wall of the trailer. I assume there was adhesive as well. Can I use a p-seal that has a shorter wiper by about 1". Also what is the purpose of the wiper? Is it necessary at all?

While you have a seal on the inside on the top and sides, the wiper helps keep rain and depris from coming in the sides and then dropping to the floor and possibly inside of the RV. You would want the wiper to at least contact the slide walls with not gaps.
