It should change colors as you press the various color buttons, it sounds like it is a different isssue. I ran into a similair problem and it sounds like the connection between the LED strips and the controller is either not making full contact or possibly connected in reverse. Meaning flip one of the connectors and re-plugin. Also, if the strip is bent or twisted to much it can cause this to occur. And finally, if you cut the strip ensure that it is in the right spot, there are lines marking the correct place to cut the strip.
