1. Locate pivot point on cabinet frame
-
With the cabinet door held open or removed, measure 5½â€¯inches down from the inside top frame and mark the vertical centerline of that frame. That’s where the pivot screw goes into the single‑eye barrel of the strut
-
Use a single screw (preferably pilot‑drilled) loose enough to allow the strut to pivot, tight enough to hold it in place.
2. Orient the support
-
The strut’s mounting flange should sit with its flush side facing outward (i.e. towards you, the cabinet front)
3. Position bracket on the door
-
Let the door swing down to your desired open angle.
-
Lay the strut bracket against the interior of the door (make sure it’s straight and not rubbing the frame), then mark the two screw holes at the bracket’s center points. Drill pilot holes if needed, and confirm the screws won’t poke through the door
4. Secure the door end
-
Screw in the flange to the door. Tighten and test—door should close smoothly, and support shouldn’t bind.
5. Test and adjust
-
Swing the door open and closed to check clearance and any rubbing.
-
Adjust pivot screw or bracket position slightly until door operates cleanly. For heavier doors, two struts per door can be necessary
Pro Tips from the Field
One Amazon reviewer summarized the steps perfectly:
“With the cabinet door removed or propped open, measure down… 5‑1/2″. … This is where the single hole … is mounted… Lower the cabinet door until it reaches the desired angle… Move the mounting flange against the door… Mark the mounting holes… Drill a pilot hole… Now mount the flange to the door and tighten… Test the closure…”
Another user added:
“We mounted the top bracket approximately one inch from the top of the door frame. Then held the door up about 90° and secured the bottom bracket to the side of the door frame with the piston extended.” That worked well in their application
Optional: use a jig if you're doing multiple doors
Some folks build a simple jig (like a plywood guide) to speed up marking multiple struts exactly. Good idea if you're outfitting several overhead doors.
📹 Video Walkthrough
There’s a YouTube video showing exactly how to install these without instructions. It goes through the pivot placement, marking the door, and finishing the install:
Summary Table
| Component | Location | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pivot screw | 5½″ down from top frame center | Loose enough to pivot |
| Flange orientation | Flush side toward front | Must be level to avoid rubbing |
| Door bracket holes | Position when door open | Pilot drill, verify screw depth |
| Testing | Open/close door | Adjust until smooth, may need second strut |
