The heat strip feature which is sold seperaly is not required nor is it needed to operate the heat pump which is included in the Mach 8. A heat strip operates at any temperature, think of it like a hair dryer. It has heated coils that heats the air as it passes over. The heat pump will only operate down to about 35 degrees before the system will begin to freeze up. The system shuts it down automacially when this happens.
