I just bought the 99242 and noticed in the instructions that I'm not supposed to start the towed vehicle if the tow wire is connected. 1. What happens if I do? 2. Doesn't the diode prevent any interaction between the towed vehicle and the motorhome?

It will not have any effect on the electrical at all and you could start the car with the unit on. As long as it is installed correctly Assuming the tow wiring was done properly there will not be any issues. You do not want to actually Tow with the car running. The system is not designed to work with a soft pedal.
